MicroNugget: Explaining SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS | CBT Nuggets

Start your free week with CBT Nuggets.

In this video, CBT Nuggets trainer Tim Warner covers the differences between Software as a Service, Platform as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service. These three terms are often misunderstood. Learn what distinguishes and defines each one, with Tim showing concrete examples of each.

Software as a Service or SaaS is any cloud computing technology primarily focused at the end-user. A hallmark of cloud services is that they’re typically sold on an on-demand, as-needed basis.

When we run an application, we’re accessing the app remotely, rather than having it installed on our local device – often through a web browser.

Platform as a Service or PaaS offerings are often of interest to anyone who wants to focus on their code, and not the underlying infrastructure.

Problems like keeping web servers and server run times up-to-date get taken care of automatically.

Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS is essentially VMs running in the cloud, useful both to software developers as well as sysadmins.

As a dev, you might be constrained or limited by what a provider can offer in the PaaS – you need access to the underlying OS or the web server software. Or sysadmins might need to stand up VMs across the cloud and let Amazon or Google take care of the uptime requirements.
